IN BRIEF Opening mid-month is Body Odyssey, a thrilling journey through the human body. Don't miss the special opening weekend packed with health and fitness events. That's not the only exhibition opening in August. Rutherford: the story of a kiwi genius is a fascinating and interactive look at the achievements of our most famous scientist.

As part of the Greater Te Papa Project, three areas in Te Papa's exciting redevelopment programme are now open. Contemporary New Zealand fashion and collections of historical museum treasures feature in the new Eyelights gallery, while there are old favourites and exciting new activities for children in the new Inspiration Station Discovery Centre. Plus, Images is now open allowing visitors to view and purchase prints from Te Papa's unique photographic collection.

We also delve into the mysteries of time, with our free Time Lecture series. Join experts from all over New Zealand every Thursday evening in August as they share knowledge and views on topics including time travel, time measurement, and perception of time. EXHIBITIONS Opening this month... Body Odyssey (18 August - 1 February 2002) An amazing, interactive exhibition designed to teach children about the wonders of the human body. From running through a blood tunnel to climbing the giant tongue, this exhibiton provides fascinating insights into the human body. Adults $6.50, children $4.00. Family concessions available. Rutherford: the story of a kiwi genius (18 August - 25 November 2001) We celebrate the life of Ernest Rutherford, New Zealand's most famous scientist. As well as discovering his story, you can explore his work through specially-made replicas of his equipment and a range of hands-on science interactives. Proudly presented by The University of Canterbury, Tait Electronics, The National Science-Technology Roadshow Trust and the Association of Science and Technology Centres of New Zealand. Free entry. On now... Inheriting the Netherlands (Until 14 October) This exhibition looks at works of Dutch born artists who have immigrated to New Zealand or New Zealand born artists of Dutch descent. Comprising of works on canvas, photographs, and 3D installations, Inheriting the Netherlands questions the artists' sense of belonging to either country and their ongoing struggle for identity. Partners in Time: Art and the Treaty (Until October) This exhibition is an artistic exploration of the continuing dialogue between Mäori and Päkehä. Partners in Time presents works from Te Papa's collection, including works by Max Hailstone and a selection from the Muka portfolio. Free entry. The Illot Centre, Level 4.

Quake Braker Venture underground to see Te Papa's newest permanent exhibition Quake Braker. This is your chance to see some of the 152 base isolators Te Papa sits on, and to learn how these New Zealand inventions make Te Papa a safer place, should an earthquake strike. Free entry. Nieuw-Zeeland - Going Dutch (Until August 2002) Te Papa's second Community Gallery exhibition focuses on the Dutch Community in New Zealand, and tells the moving stories of some of the approximately 100,000 New Zealanders of Dutch descent. Nieuw-Zeeland-Going Dutch shows a vibrant community that has greatly enriched our culture. Free entry. The Community Gallery, Level 4. Te Aupouri (Until October 2001) Te Aupouri, an iwi from the far north of Aotearoa, tell their gutsy and compelling story of survival. This exhibition includes fascinating history, exciting contemporary art, and beautiful carving. Level 4. Free entry.

EVENTS TIME LECTURE SERIES What exactly is time? How is it measured? What does it tell us about life and ourselves as social, biological and physical entities? How have concepts of time evolved? How do calendars vary from one culture to another? Is there a beginning to time and if so, is there an end to it? Te Papa presents a free, fascinating lecture series that looks at these and other time related concepts.

LECTURE - GEOLOGICAL TIME Te Papa Kaihautü, Te Taru White, speaks about traditional Mäori knowledge and understanding of deep time. Dr James Crampton from the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences, explores the concept of geological time. Thursday 2 August, 6.30pm. Soundings Theatre, Level 2. Free entry.

LECTURE - BIOLOGICAL TIME Tohunga Höhepa Kereopa (Tühoe) describes his traditional Mäori understanding of life cycles, rhythms of change, and growth within the environment, and explores the time aspects of physical and psychological wellbeing. Dr Stephen Goldson, Science Leader, Biocontrol and Bisosecurity Group AgResearch Ltd, presents insights into biological time keeping and its measurement, including the nature and expression of our internal clocks, growth, and ageing. LECTURE - CULTURAL TIME Dr Taiarahia Black, Associate Professor, School of Mäori Studies Massey University, talks about Matariki and the Mäori calendar, its structure, measurement, expression through whakapapa, waiata and narrative, and its importance in traditional Mäori life. Dr Janet Davidson Curator Pacific Te Papa, discusses calendar making in European and Pacific cultures, as well as the globalisation or standardisation of time and its effects on "culture". LECTURE - TIME TRAVEL Dr Ken Perszyk, Programme Director, School of Humanities and Social Sciences from Victoria University of Wellington looks at the performance of time, mathematics, logic and the imagination, exploring challenging theoretical perspectives, and prospects of time travel.Thursday 23 August, 6.30pm. LECTURE - ASTRONOMICAL TIME Pauline Harris MSc Physics University of Canterbury, presents a Mäori perspective of the sky and its interconnections with the land and people, illustrating Mäori perceptions and measurement of cosmic time and infinity. John Hearnshaw Professor Astronomy University of Canterbury, examines the sky, space, the universe and he measurement and enormity of time, describing time from the atomic to the cosmic scale, and explaining the limits of time.
