Kiwis given chance to win a racehorse

New Zealanders are being given the chance to experience the glamour and excitement of owning their own racehorse.

It’s part of a promotion the TAB is running in conjunction with the Whangarei Racing Club and Wellington Racing Club this Saturday, 14 July.

Every person who places a bet of $10 or more on-course and off-course on the Whangarei or Trentham races will go into the draw to win a two-year lease of a two-year-old filly sired by Langfuhr from the family of top European stallion Danzig.

The filly will be supplied by Peter and Philip Vela of Pencarrow Stud and trained by one of New Zealand’s leading trainers, Donna Logan. All expenses will be paid during the two years, including training, feed, track fees, racing fees and vet bills. The total package is valued at around $40,000.

TAB spokesperson Hamish McKegg said it was important for people to hold onto all their betting tickets – even losing ones – as they could be ‘winning’ tickets.

He said 20 tickets – one from each of the 20 races – will be drawn from the TAB computer on Sunday 15 July. The 20 winning ticket holders will each receive a Philips TV and then go into the draw for the main prize on Saturday 21 July.

The 20 preliminary winning tickets will be displayed on Trackside and Teletext page 610 after the draw on Sunday and the ticket holders have to register by Friday 20 July to claim their TV and go into the main draw.

Whangarei Racing Club spokesperson Nicci Benney said last year’s filly, Vapour Trail, has been placed several times and said last year’s winner, Bruce Sherwin, was very optimistic about her chances as a three year old. She will be starting in this Saturday’s Westbury Stud Northland Breeders Stakes at Ruakaka.

“We are expecting a large crowd and a great atmosphere on Saturday and look forward to some exciting racing,” she said.
