2001 NRL Debutant Motu Tony Re-Signs With The Vodafone Warriors
Auckland, New Zealand, June 22, 2001 – The Vodafone Warriors today officially announced the re-signing of one of this season’s most exciting newcomers to the squad, Motu Tony.
At just 20 years old, Tony has been impressive since his first game for the Vodafone Warriors. He is consistently named in the club’s starting line up for NRL competition, and despite his relative inexperience, he has already had his first Kiwi cap.
Tony’s new contract with the Vodafone Warriors extends his previous agreement for another three seasons– securing his commitment with the club until the end of 2004.
Coach Daniel Anderson is delighted with Tony’s decision to remain with the Warriors. “Motu has been outstanding since his NRL debut, his brilliance on attack has been obvious to everyone. He is a fast learner and a very intelligent league player. He has stepped up to first grade football admirably and proven he has the potential to be a player of the highest calibre.”
Motu Tony first caught the attention of club management when he played in the New Zealand Residents team that toured Australia towards the end of 2000. Along with several other new faces, Tony has been a significant contributor to the sparkling attacking play made by the club this season under Coach Daniel Anderson.
General Manager Mick Watson said late last year that it would be emerging talent like Tony the new-look Vodafone Warriors would build their side on. Watson is more than satisfied with how the strategy of seeking out local talent has worked for the club to date.
“Motu, along with the likes of Clinton Toopi, Henry Faafili, and Francis Meli, has been an important member of our first grade side this year. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to pursue these guys when we were faced with the task of rebuilding this club.
“The Vodafone Warriors have demonstrated to fans and opposition alike they are a team capable of delivering great football, as well as a team with the potential to be a real force in the NRL within the next couple of years. We’re going to continue to tap into this country’s huge pool of talent and make sure we recognise players who’ll be able to help us build this club further,” Watson says.
The Vodafone Warriors have already re-signed Monty Betham, Henry Faafili and Francis Meli until the end of 2004, while Justin Morgan’s contract has been extended until the end of 2002. Management will begin working toward securing the signatures of senior players shortly.
