LION LAUNCHES SOUTHERN CROSS WHEAT BEER
Southern Cross Wheat Beer, brewed in the Speight's (Dunedin) brewery is the fourth release in the Brewmaster's Selection, available from 12 February. It is a Belgian style Wheat beer, developed using premium ingredients. The name is derived from the Southern Cross hops, which are grown in the South Island and provide this beer with a mild bitterness to balance the natural sweetness of the Wheat and Pilsner malt blend.

SPEIGHT'S LAUNCHES PALE ALE The Speight's brewery has launched Pale Ale to co-incide with the introduction of the Speight's Legacy Series on February 12. Speight's Pale Ale is a special malt blend, brewed by J Speight & Company 1949 - 1953. Today's beer is based on the original recipe, using the same high quality ingredients to retain the heritage and features of the early brew. http://www.brewing.co.nz/20010212speightspaleale.htm
SPEIGHT'S REFLECTS ON HERITAGE
Speight's has launched the Speight's Legacy Series, a range of specialty beers, based on the original recipes of the J Speight and Company brewhouse "The Legacy Series has been launched in anticipation of the Speight's 125th anniversary in 2001. THE ALE FILE by Luke Nicholas
"Ask for a watermelon"
What's in the glass?
Rangitoto Brewing Company's Watermelon Ale, 4.0 per cent alcohol by volume.
What's interesting about this beer?
Inspired by a recent trip to the US, Kevin Schwass (owner of R'toto) returned with a taste for these fun beers, flavoured with real fruit extracts from California. Seeing this popular trend of fruit beers in brewpubs in the US, the idea has been introduced at R'toto. Garnished with a slice of watermelon, the beer will only be on sale as long as watermelons are in season.
What does it taste and smell like?
The actual beer looks like any normal pale lager, till you bring it to your nose and smell the huge watermelon aroma, so big in fact it is surprising. On drinking you are immediately hit with a Shrewsbury or jam-like flavour that is big but disappears into a clean refreshing, slightly sweet beer with a full body.
Where do you get it?
On tap at R'toto Pub & Café, Takapuna $4.80 a glass; also at Hugo's Frog Bar, Newmarket. As with all good brewpubs (pubs with breweries in them) you are able to get a free taste of the beer before you buy a glass.
The Ale File appears every Wednesday in VIVA, NZ Herald.
CZECH BREWER BUDVAR'S BEER OUTPUT UP IN 2000
Budejovicky Budvar NP, the Czech Republic's third-largest brewer, reported that beer output rose 7.1% last year from 1999's numbers due to higher local demand and increased exports to Western Europe, according to a Feb. 7 Bloomberg report. The state-owned brewery said that its output reached 1.35 million hectoliters, up from 1.26 million hectoliters in 1999. Revenue was up 11.4% to 2.67 billion koruna ($71.8 million). Home sales totaled 843,000 hectoliters and exports rose to 504,000 hectoliters, approximately one-third of all Czech beer exports. "Budvar has been successful in increasing its production, sales and revenue for the seventh year in a row, especially on the domestic market," said Petr Jansky, Budvar's economic manager. Budvar sells its beer in its local market under the Budweiser Budvar label, but has been locked out of the United States due to legal battles with Anheuser-Busch Companies over the Budweiser trademark. Recently, to avoid the trademark dispute, Budvar has exported to the United States under the brand-name Czechvar. From www.beerweek.com
