NZ BUBBLY TOPS SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE TASTING
New
Zealand’s wine industry has won another important
international accolade.
“Rory”, the Méthode Traditionnelle sparkling wine from Kim Crawford Wines has scored top marks in a London tasting involving 74 sparkling wines from New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina and South Africa.
The tasting was organised by the respected magazine “Wine”, to discover how well the Southern Hemisphere’s sparkling wines match their celebrated northern cousins.
The panel of distinguished judges awarded Rory 89 out of 100 points, with one of their number, Charles Metcalfe, praising its attractive toffee aromas, gentle and interesting savoury flavours and good crisp acid.
“Rory is our first attempt at a sparkling wine. It’s the result of combining a traditional choice of grape with modern winemaking technology,” says Kim Crawford.
“We’re delighted with the wine and with this result, which certainly says something about the diversity of New Zealand’s export wine industry,” he adds.
Described as a sparkling wine of great complexity, underlying fruit weight and good balance, Rory takes its name from Mr Crawford’s six-year-old son.
“It’s a fairly lively wine, rather like the boy it’s named after,” says the proud father.
