Issue 42 – 11 September 2000 - Yahoo! Australia & NZ Picks - Real Beer *********************************************************** The Real Beer Page – Australia & New Zealand, featured in Yahoo! Australia & NZ Picks http://au.yahoo.com/picks/20000904.html 100’S OF AUSTRALIAN BEERS This last week saw the 11th Annual National Festival of Beers at Story Bridge Hotel in Brisbane, Australia. On offer were over 100 beers on tap from all across Australia. An opportunity to taste beers from most of the brewers, large and small from lagers to stouts.
If you missed Story Bridge and are in Sydney in the coming weeks and want a range of beers similar to that Story Bridge offered, you need to visit the Australian Hotel in the Rocks. The Australian Hotel offers possible the largest range of Australian beers anywhere in the world. Not only does it offer all the mainstream beers but a huge selection of the bottled microbrewery beers from around Australia. http://www.realbeer.co.nz/destinations/sydney/australian.html
SEARCH FOR THE GREAT AUSSIE BEER by Willie Simpson A truly Great Aussie Beer must be something of a national icon which we can hold up alongside the likes of Vegemite, Aeroplane Jelly and lamingtons. Is there a single beer out there which has become engrained on the Australian psyche or best reflects our national character? Is there a beer equivalent of Grange Hermitage (rare, expensive and excellent) or even Jacob's Creek, the international flagship for our wine industry? Foster's Lager probably comes closest to the Jacob's Creek image in our export markets but a match for Grange isn't so immediately apparent. I recall Cooper's Extra Stout once being touted as the "Grange Hermitage of beer" but this had more to do with its dark, robust palate than its rarity or expense. http://www.realbeer.co.nz/library/authors/simpson-w/aussiebeer.html
EXTREME BEER by Michael Jackson "American critic praises New Zealand Beer," headlined one of that country's major daily newspapers. I was the critic and, as I often do, I was speaking from a podium in the United States -- but my passport still accurately identifies me as a citizen of the United Kingdom. The New Zealand news story derived from my much-vaunted tenth annual series of tutored tastings at the University of Philadelphia, at which I presented a selection of the most interesting beers to have emerged over the past decade. I did, indeed, single out one particular New Zealand brewer. I was introduced to his beers last year, at a brewpub called Galbraith's Alehouse, in Auckland, the country's biggest city. No beer-loving visitor to Auckland should miss this pub, which is in a 1912 public library building, at Mount Eden Road in the inner-city neighbourhood of Grafton …(more) http://beerhunter.com/documents/19133-001344.html"> http://beerhunter.com/documents/19133-001344.html
