We are passing on information about three events at the University of Auckland, August 16-18 - two illustrated lectures
about the history of moving images, and a screening of recent experimental films.
Arthur & Corinne Cantrill are among Australia's best-known avant-garde film-makers. They have been making films together since
1960, achieving international recognition for their innovative style and content. Together they have edited 100 issues
of Cantrills Filmnotes, a leading magazine of film and video art, and they have done a great deal of important and
original research on the history of cinema. The events are:
(1) Wednesday August 16, 7.30 p.m., in the Arts 1 building at the University of Auckland (14a Symonds Street, near the
corner of Grafton Rd) in the Drama Theatre (3rd floor) "THE FIRST MASS MEDIA" a lecture by Arthur Cantrill, illustrated
by slides, about the forerunners of cinema in the 19th century - the magic lantern, the diorama, the panorama, the
phantasmagoria, the photography of Marey and Muybridge, etc. - and how these media may have influenced human visual
experience.
(2) Thursday August 17, 7.30 p.m., in the Arts 1 building at the University of Auckland (14a Symonds Street, near the
corner of Grafton Rd), in Room 215 (2nd floor). "COLOUR AND CINEMA: AN AESTHETIC OF COLOUR IN FILM" The history of
colour, from the first colour films, through artists of the 1930s such as Len Lye and Oskar Fischinger, to the
experimenters of today. (A lecture/screening by Arthur Cantrill.)
(3) Friday August 18, 7.30 p.m., in the Arts 1 building at the University of Auckland (14a Symonds Street, near the
corner of Grafton Rd), in Room 215 (2nd floor). "CHROMATIC ARTICULATION" A screening of recent films by Arthur and
Corinne Cantrill, including recent 3-colour separation and single-frame studies. Note: For events #2 and 3, a donation
of $5 per person would be welcome.
