RIALTO FILM CLUB --------------------------------------

ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER -------------------- When Manuela's son, Esteban, is run over by a car, she is devastated. That same night, while she waits in the hospital, she reads the last lines her son wrote in a notebook that he always kept by his side. "This morning I looked through my mother's bedrooom until I found a stack of photgraphs. All of them were cut in half. My father, I suppose. I have the impression that my life is missing that same half. I want to meet him, I don't care who he is, or how he behaved with my mother. No one can take that right away from me." In memory of her son, Manuela leaves Madrid and goes to Barcelona in search of his father, Lola. But the search proves more difficult than she ever thought. All About My Mother was the winner of Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes and the Oscars, as well as being awarded Best Director at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Pedro Almodovar (Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down, Women on the Verge of A Nervous Breakdown), this film has received worldwide critical acclaim, with The Times commenting: "The work of a master... Almodovar has transformed himself and is emotionally the most complete director working today."

Screening at the Rialto Auckland and Wellington.

CHANEL NO 5 ORIGINALS SERIES ----------------------------- In an era scarred by the remake, Rialto Cinemas offer you the chance to capture the mood of the real thing. The Chanel No.5 Originals Season of six outstanding classic films features six of the greatest original artists in all their big screen glory. It is easy to forget that many film genres and characters we see at the movies today, were originally created by dynamic and charismatic actors and film directors. Brad Pitt's torso in Thelma and Louise was nothing compared to the sensation Marlon Brando caused when he appeared half naked in A Street Car Named Desire. To many of us, Elvis was one of the first artists to attract screaming girls, yet the original Popstar, Dick Powell was crooning to huge numbers of adoring fans in the 1930s, and hit television programmes like The Sopranos all come from the original gangster image created by the one and only James Cagney.
