TRAFFIC -------------- If there's one film that actually
deserves to be compared to Trainspotting, it's this brash,
flashy tale of five friends on a weekend out in Cardiff.
Writer/director Justin Kerrigan's sensational debut has
provided UK cinema with its next step forward. A romantic
counter-culture comedy, it's a hectic rush from the
opening, where Jip (The Lakes' John Simm) introduces his
mates to the viewer. Jip's sexually insecure, Lulu's a club
babe, Moff deals (despite living with his policeman dad),
Koop peddles hardcore hip hop and obsesses about his
girlfriend, Nina. The five spend their weeks in mundane
jobs, waiting for real life to begin on Friday night. Along
the way, the characters pull us into the party by directly
addressing the camera and haul us into their minds with
dazzling daydream sequences. The soundtrack's outstanding
and features Fatboy Slim and Orbital.
Screening at the
Rialto Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and
Dunedin. EAST IS EAST ------------ Comedy erupts on a
daily basis in the Khan family's cramped terraced house
with its scant indoor plumbing. For George Khan's seven kids
- a proud Pakistani who owns the local chippie - life is
one long compromise. Tomboy Meenah prefers playing footie
to wearing a sari, hippie Saleem pretends to be studying
engineering when he's really at art school, heart-throb
Tariq has got a reputation as a local Casanova, and Sajid
hasn't even been circumcised yet. For George Khan
("Ghengis" to his kids), life is an uphill battle to get his
family to conform to traditional Pakistani values. But this
is Salford in the 1970s. George's English wife Ella is a
Lancashire loudmouth, and his kids have got minds of their
own. Screening at the Rialto Auckland, Hamilton,
Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Screening this
week at the Rialto... AUCKLAND ---------
