1st Female President for Institute of Accountants
NEWS RELEASE 22ND NOVEMBER 1999
FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT FOR INSTITUTE OF CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS OF NEW ZEALAND
Sue Sheldon will this week become the first female president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand.
Ms Sheldon will take over the role at the
Institute’s AGM in Auckland on Thursday
18
November.
She takes up the position as the Institute celebrates the 100th anniversary of the admission of the first women to the Institute. Just as New Zealand was the first country to grant female suffrage, it was also the first country in the British Commonwealth to admit women members to its professional accounting body.
Christchurch-based, Ms Sheldon, of Bayliss Sheldon Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, is a well-known business person.
Sue holds several directorships, including Meridian Energy Ltd, where she is the chairperson of the Audit and Finance Committee.
She is also the chairperson of Crown Forestry Management Ltd; and a director of wool processing company Woolfill Corporation NZ Ltd, bedding manufacturer Nimbus Bedware, and Woolknop Holdings Ltd, an investment company and textile manufacturer. She was previously a director of Christchurch International Airport.
Since her election to the Institute of Chartered
Accountants of New Zealand Council in 1993, Ms Sheldon has
fulfilled a number of roles, including first Vice President,
and chaired various national and branch committees. She is
also a director of the Institute’s wholly owned subsidiary,
Advanced Business Education Limited.

Ms Sheldon is looking forward to her new role, and to the fundamental changes ahead of the Institute, as it recognises the rapid changes in the nature of accountancy, driven by new information technology. This will require the accounting profession to provide increasingly broad skills to meet New Zealand’s business demands.
“Providing more extensive skill opportunities for members, forming alliances, embracing a new breed of business professionals and removing inhibiting regulations, will be the key objectives for us, as we move into a knowledge-based economy and accountants becoming recognised more as business advisors.”
Ms Sheldon succeeds current president Mr Keith Smith, whose one-year tenure ends at the Institute’s AGM.
