TEMUKA TABLEWARE FOR APEC LEADERS
New Zealand pottery icon Temuka Pottery has completed the geometric array of tableware for next month's APEC Leaders' Dinner, APEC New Zealand 99 Catering Coordinator David Williams said today.
The company has been commissioned to create square plates for the dinner, to be held at the Auckland Town Hall on September 12. The plates will be used to serve entrees and complement the round plates manufactured for the main course and the triangular dishes custom made for dessert.
"The brief for the entree plate was based on size and shape," Mr Williams says.
"We required a flat, black, 29 centimetre square design to show the entree at its best. Some of Temuka's sushi plates came pretty close to meeting these needs but we wanted something bigger and flatter so we commissioned a modified version.
"While one of the more established companies of its type, Temuka always has a fresh approach to its designs. The work we've commissioned proves that New Zealand tableware and ceramics are up there with the best."
While the project is not out of the ordinary in terms of size, Temuka Sales Manager Catherine Slater says association with an event of APEC's calibre makes it exceptional.
"This is a high profile international event and having our tableware at the dinner means we can share a small piece of the limelight. Being part of APEC also serves as a useful marketing tool for our brand."
Mr Williams has ordered 410 plates for the APEC Leaders' Dinner and these are currently in production. The plates were designed by Temuka's die and mould maker Owen Port. They will be completed by 3 September.
