Telecommunications Forum Warns Retailers About 3G Shutdown

The Telecommunications Forum is warning New Zealand retailers about their responsibilities to consumers regarding the upcoming shutdown of the country’s 3G networks.

Spark, 2degrees and One New Zealand will shutdown their 3G networks from the end of this year, meaning devices that rely on 3G will no longer connect.

Devices that are sold new today may not be able to connect following the shutdown, and retailers have to ensure customers are fully aware of this when selling devices, says Telecommunications Forum CEO Paul Brislen.

“Devices have to be fit for purpose for a reasonable period of time and customers need to be fully informed if the product they’re buying won’t work next year.”

Brislen says retailers were informed of the shutdown some time ago, so shouldn’t be selling products that have a limited lifespan.

“Retailers and importers have known for some time that the shutdown was coming and should be well prepared to manage stock levels accordingly.”

Consumers are advised to ask retailers specifically about 3G-reliance when buying devices, as some products claim to be 4G or 5G compliant but still make use of 3G for voice calling.

The TCF is concerned that offshore retailers may try to unload old stock that no longer works in other countries, and warns consumers to be wary.

“Customers always need to be wary when buying products, but the onus is on the retailer to make sure the products they sell are compliant with the relevant legislation.”

The 3G shutdown will affect a range of devices not just mobile phones, including webcams, health alarms, alarm systems and other industrial devices. Retailers of these products should likewise warn customers if the product being purchased is reliant on 3G connectivity.
