Your wedding day should be wonderfully memorable. This starts, of course, with your wedding dress. Our experts at Love & Lace can help you choose a dress that’s just right for you.
• Understand Your Personal Style
First and foremost, you need to know your personal style. Are you traditional? Do you like the vintage look? Are you a bit Bohemian, Boho-chic or even a little punk-like Emma Thompson during her wedding to Kenneth Branagh? Is glam more your style? Do you lean more toward the classic, elegant or romantic? Take your personal style into account before you choose your wedding dress.
• Consider the Wedding Theme and Setting
Another thing to consider before you choose a wedding gown is where you’re going to be married. Are you going to be married in a little country church that sits 150 people? Are you planning to be married in a cathedral? Are you going to City Hall? Will you be married on the beach, in a forest glade, in your backyard or will you throw caution to the wind and get married by an Elvis impersonator in Las Vegas? All of these choices will determine what sort of wedding attire is appropriate.
• What’s Your Body Type?
There’s a beautiful wedding dress or gown for every sort of body type, and here are some things to consider.
When it comes to body types, fashion experts don’t use words such as tall, short, thin or plump. The range of body types, at least when it comes to a wedding dress, are pear-shaped, rectangular, hourglass, oval/apple and inverted triangle.
A woman who is pear-shaped has hips wider than her bust or her waist. This body type looks best in an A-line dress with a high, Empire-style waist, or a flouncy ballgown.
A woman who has a rectangle shape is about the same size in all three areas. An A-line dress or a beautifully beaded and embroidered ballgown is good for this figure.
A woman with an hourglass figure has a small waist. Again, an A-line dress is good for this type of figure.
A woman with an oval and apple shape has a waist that’s larger than her bust and hips, which are about the same size. A gown with an Empire waistline or an A-line dress with a plunging neckline looks good here.
A woman who has an inverted triangle shape has a bust wider than her hips or her waist. A bride with this body shape stands out in an A-line or ball gown with a halter top.
• What Fabrics and Textures Speak to You?
Fabrics used for wedding dresses are famously luxurious. What you choose depends on both your budget and your aesthetics. Silk, woven from the cocoons of silk moth pupae, is a very popular fabric as it is soft and lustrous. There are different types of silk, including doupioni silk, crepe de chine, organza, peau de soie and satin, which describes how the silk fibers are woven. Wedding dresses are also made of artificial silk.
Cotton is also used in bridal wear. Types of cotton used for wedding dresses include georgette and chiffon. Polyester and rayon are also used to make beautiful dresses.
In the end, no matter what type of wedding dress you choose, stay true to yourself, and throw the trends out the window.
