Confidently Beautiful: Fashion Tips For A Confident Look

Style and fashion got you feeling down? A lack of confidence in your style can not only ruin your day but affect your self-confidence - finding your style is, in its own way, a path of self-discovery, allowing you to express to the world who you are.

A confident look is all about making you feel good in your own skin as you confront the world, whether it’s a job interview, meeting someone you want to impress, or trying to build a professional wardrobe. We’re happy to bring you 10 Fashion Tips to help you build up your confidence!

10 Fashion Tips to Help you Feel Confident Inside and Out

1. Wear You

A fashion magazine can’t tell you everything and it certainly can’t make you like a colour or a pattern that just isn’t to your tastes. Confident style tip number one is the liberty to wear the things you like! If you don’t like “this season’s trending colour” just don’t wear it; if you like the pattern on a shirt, try it on.

Being genuine to yourself is an essential foundation to building up your confidence, and the same is true for what you wear. Marie Kondo was onto something when she asked the world, “does it spark joy?”

2. Identify your Colours

We all have colours that look better on us than others, where green washes someone out it brings out another person’s eyes - but how do you know which ones are your colours? Worrying about colour theory in fashion is a sure-fire way to drain your confidence, thankfully there are online sources to answer the question, what clothing colours suit me?

A classic first step is taking a look at the veins in your wrists to determine whether you suit cool or warm colours: blue and purple veins for cool, and green for warm.

“Colour identity is essential to people or a brand because people will remember the colour universe of a collection rather than the details of the clothes” - Justine Leconte (Fashion and Jewelry Designer).

3. Consider your Body Type

Understanding (and loving!) your body type is a major part in developing a style that brings you confidence. Identifying your body type and dressing accordingly has an amazing effect on how knowledgeable your fashion choices appear, and can give you the confidence to make even bolder style choices.

It’s all too easy to shy away from styles and clothing we love the look of, telling ourselves it’s out of our comfort zone or that we’re not the right size. Those looks seem so far out of reach, but take some time to find your shape (round, triangle, inverted triangle, square, hourglass) and learn to work with your body and find styles that accentuate your assets.

4. Flaunt your Assets

As you develop your style, consider what parts of your body you love and learn how to dress them the way you find most appealing.

Sometimes our greatest assets are the parts of our body we end up feeling self-conscious about, but you can find styles that flaunt them on your terms. For example, having beautiful, long legs doesn’t mean you need to flaunt them with mini skirts and daisy dukes, a skirt that falls to the knee can just as easily let you show of your slender legs without making you feel too exposed.

“Style is knowing what suits you, who you are, and what your assets are. It is also accepting it all” - Bianca Jagger (activist and former actress)

5. Overcome your Insecurities

Our bodies are temples but sometimes, they can feel like prisons without us even realising it. Many of us struggle with body image and feel self-conscious about our appearance, especially when we’re trying on clothes and nothing seems to fit right.

Fashion has the amazing ability to completely overturn our body image anxieties, making us feel secure and confident in ourselves, all with a simple change up to our style that helps us to embrace our imperfections.

6. Dress for the Occasion

As fashion icon Giorgio Armani once said, “Elegance is not standing out, but being remembered”.

When you’re styling an outfit, keep in mind what you’re dressing for. You’ll feel confident in your style if you can find that sweet spot between over- and underdressed. And, hey - it never hurts to throw a spare pair of shoes in the car in case those gorgeous heels start to kill your feet.

7. Avoid Romanticising Celebrity Fashion

It’s fine to look to celebrities and famous figures for inspiration; they’re often trend setters and trail blazers. But while celebrities have a major influence on fashion styles (and they look so confident, don’t they?), don’t let yourself get too caught up in the #trends.

Giorgio Versace gave us a great nugget of wisdom when he said, “Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but decide what you are, what you want to express but the way you dress and the way you live”.

Trends come and go but your style will always be a part of you, growing and changing as you do. A confident look is just as much about learning all the tips as it is in having confidence that it’s your style.

8. The Danger of Comparison

We’re all a bit guilty of comparing ourselves to others. We want to look and feel good, of course, but comparing ourselves to others only feeds our insecurities.

Keep an eye on yourself, not just to achieve a confident look, but also for your mental health.

"Be true to yourself. Knowing who you are and what you stand for is important, but don’t be afraid to evolve… Always try to focus on creating and doing things that genuinely make you happy, things that feel good in your gut and your heart, and you really can’t go wrong." ZENDAYA (actor).

9. Quality is Key

Fast fashion has flooded stores around us with some admittedly nice clothing, so why should you bother spending more for similar looking items? Sometimes spending a little extra (or a lot!) seriously is worth it, not for brand names and prestige, but for the quality assurance.

A blended wool jumper will keep you considerably warmer than it’s polyester counterpart and your jeans won’t see holes in the knees and thighs if you pay for the quality materials and labour that went into creating them. In the end, you’ll get more wear out of them and maybe even see them become vintage pieces.

10. ESCAPE Fashion

The true secret to dressing confidently is being yourself, leaving behind the ‘rules’ of fashion and wearing what makes you happy and being confident in your appearance. At some point, clothing will be the accessory to your confident look, not the look itself.

Escape the norms, be daring and bold and limitless. Let yourself have fashion faux pas and laugh it off (better yet, make it your own)!

To paraphrase Azzedine Alaïa: Designer makes clothes; Women make fashion. It’s all you.
