Mitre 10 Trade 2019 Keynote Award for Women in Trades now open

Tuesday, 21st May 2019

Press Release: Women in Trades NZ

Women in Trades NZ - Working to get more women into trades.

Applications are now open for the Mitre 10 Trade Keynote Award, to be presented at the fourth annual Women in Trades event at Proclima Hub in Auckland on Thursday 22nd August 2019.

The Award provides public presentation and personal story crafting skills to an inspiring tradeswoman. It is open to tradeswomen at any stage of their career, but they must be able to attend coaching sessions and give the keynote in Auckland.

The Award Recipient will work with professional public speaking coach Diana Thomson of Speechmarks prior to the WIT 2019 event to craft a presentation about their experience as a woman in trades and will give the Keynote Address on the evening.

The inaugural Keynote Award recipient, sponsored by Mitre 10 Trade, was the inspiring Pip Buunk of Fulton Hogan.

Pip received the award for her groundbreaking role as New Zealand’s only registered female driller. She worked with Speechmarks public speaking coach Diana Thomson to refine her story and pump up her presenting skills. Pip did an amazing job on the night sharing her inspiring story with the attendees and encouraging them to follow their hearts and pursue the career that's right for them, not what might traditionally have been expected of them.

Pip then joined the panel discussion that followed sharing the challenges and opportunities for women considering a trades career. Pip loved being part of the event;

“The skills I learned under Diana’s guidance have served me well for several speeches, as well as for meetings and interviews i have taken part in since. I see having worked with with her as invaluable to my personal and professional development and plan to work with her again where I need guidance on future speaking engagements.”

Daimler Teves, Trade Marketing Manager at Mitre 10 Trade, is thrilled to again sponsor the Keynote award and be involved in the evening. He summed up the feeling of the Women in Trades supporters;

“A career in trades is not something women have traditionally considered or thought feasible, but this event seeks to change that.

We met many students keen to consider trade as a career, and hearing from Pip Buunk, the country’s only registered female driller was invaluable. It demonstrated that there is a place for women in industry and left many of the students feeling inspired to find out more.”

If you would love to share your own story and beef up your public speaking skills then apply for our 2019 Keynote Award.

Applications close Wednesday 26th June 2019.
