Climate Change is the biggest environmental challenge of our time, with overwhelming evidence showing that this is
happening across the planet. The likelihood of humans being the dominant cause of this issue is high through
human-induced activities and it’s important that we work together to combat this problem.
We can all contribute to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and the first step is being aware of your own impact and
taking actions to reduce them.
New Zealand Agriculture is consistently under fire for its contribution to climate change, yet it's good to understand
that this is just one of many factors we need to address. As a certifier for organic farmers, producers and
manufacturers we are committed to working alongside each sector towards a more sustainable future.
BioGro NZ recognises and applauds the research that has gone into finding solutions, and much of this can be found
through innovation and technology. As a result of this research, many products have surfaced, and many seek Inputs for
Organics Certification through BioGro to enable these products to be used on organic and regenerative farms.
“BioGro New Zealand’s Inputs Certification Program has evaluated products for all aspects of organic production, from
the fertilisers that our certified growers spread on their land to the supplements fed to organic animals. Throughout
this evaluation process, our certification team guides manufacturers though the many rigors and regulations of
international organic standards." continues Robert Murray, inputs programme manager.
A recent article put forward by a BioGro customer highlights the role that biotechnology can play to reduce farmers greenhouse gas
emissions and allow farmers to not only meet their targets but can also increase productivity. AgResearch worked
alongside Zest Biotech to model the benefits of using some of their non-GMO biotechnology products.
“Modern economic policy now internalises the costs of pollution. The NZ carbon tax validate this. Agriculture has a
massive role to play in rescuing the rest of society from our bad habits. Regenerative and Organic Agriculture will be
some of the ways we achieve this, through sound science that recognises natural processes and works with them.” says Donald Nordeng, CEO of BioGro NZ.
BioGro’s Inputs for Organics programme now hosts thousands of products on its online database that are available for
organic and non-organic producers across New Zealand. Over 1000 organic producers currently use this database as it is
the single resource of its kind in New Zealand.
