High-capacity wireless network deployed at Victory Convention Centre

A new high-performance wireless network at Auckland’s Victory Convention Centre can support more than 2000 users simultaneously.

Intellium Technology, IT support provider for Victory Convention Centre, scoped, built, tested and deployed the network at the centre’s 2,200-seat auditorium within one month.

Chris Adams, Victory Convention Centre Venue Manager, says the project was time dependent as the venue hosted a number of large-scale events in April where attendees needed to connect to Wi-Fi.

He says that while previously, attendees would generally be expected to turn their phones off while in the auditorium, nowadays there is an expectation that they will engage with the event online or via an app.

The project brief - to provide high-performance internet connections for up to 2000 devices simultaneously in a compact and irregular space - provided a welcome challenge for Intellium Technology.

The New Zealand owned, and operated company recommended using Ubiquiti UniFi technology, which is used to provide WiFi to large stadiums in the United States. Intellium runs a fully monitored and managed Network As A Service for the convention centre.

Chris says having an IT support provider he can rely on, “makes my life really easy.”

“What makes it difficult with this venue is the events and needing to schedule work around that so there’s no interruption or down time,” he says.

“Intellium was really flexible and worked around our schedule. They were very efficient, and everything was in on time, which was very impressive.”

Dale Daniels, Intellium Director, Infrastructure, says wireless networks for high density locations such as the Victory Convention Centre are sometimes deployed but left unmanned and unmonitored and with no real design to the service, resulting in a poor experience for the user.

To provide a great customer experience, the network needs to be well designed, managed and monitored, he says.
