Provincial “retro’ party” mega mansion placed on the market

One of the biggest houses in the Rangitikei township of Marton – a stately 590-square metre five bedroom/three-bathroom dwelling with an interior décor style dating back to the disco era – has been placed on the market for sale.
The grand two-storey mock-Tudor home at 127A Wanganui Road was built in the 1990s and sits down a long private driveway on more than six hectares of estate-like land.
Within its walls are five large bedrooms, an office, kitchen dining room, additional formal dining room, formal lounge, library, master bedroom with a walk-in dressing room leading to the en-suite bathroom, and a formal entry lobby.
The property is adorned with design elements indicative of the 1970s – including extensive wood paneling throughout, terracotta and slate stone-patterned linoleum in the kitchen and en-suite bathroom areas, a crème-coloured spa bath, and floral-inspired Axminster carpet.
The property is being marketed for sale by negotiation through Bayleys Feilding, with offers being taken until April 11. Salesperson Grant O’Shanassy said the solidly-built ‘70s-style home was prime for redecoration.
“The Block NZ could be coming to little ol’ Marton,” Mr O’Shanassy said.
“The home has served its various owners well over the past three decades or so, but is well and truly ready for a new life. It’s one of the biggest houses in Marton – and at 590 square metres of building space it would among some of the biggest in New Zealand
“It’s like the old proverb when it comes to homes built in this era… ‘she has great bones.’ The bones just need a new outfit though – because at the moment they look pretty much like a retro’ party from the age of disco.
“Outside, there’s enough room on the front lawn for a full-size tennis court or skateboard half-pipe, and enough room around the back for a football pitch and a rugby field. With a horse stabling complex adjacent to the driveway, there is also ample space for the potential to create an equestrian complex with jumps and fenced arena.
“If this was Auckland, there’d be some developer sniffing around wanting to put a high-rise apartment complex on the property,” he said.
Marton, with a population of 4,548 residents recorded at the 2013 census, has some 2,280 residential dwellings. It is the largest rural services town in the Rangitikei district.
“The home is perfect for a young couple with children who want some big family space both inside and out, and who have the time and budget to modernise this huge residence,” Mr O’Shanassy said.
“Being so big, it also has the capacity, subject to any necessary required council consents, to operate as a boutique commercial accommodation provider.”
