Judging Panel Announced for ServiceIQ New Zealand Museums Award
The Service IQ New Zealand Museum Awards will be held at a ceremony in Te Papa on 22 May. Judging the awards this year
is a distinguished group of experts from a wide range of national and regional museums and galleries, as well as
universities and other cultural institutions around the country. Whether coming from an academic background or as a
director or curator, all are experts in their field.
All members of Museums Aotearoa are eligible to enter the awards and judges will be looking for entries that demonstrate
the vision of the institution; engagement with audiences; resourceful use of people, skills and collections, and
innovative approaches to exhibitions and collections.
‘We are always impressed by the high calibre of entries we receive for these awards, and the expertise in the judging
panels is a reflection of that’, said Phillipa Tocker, Executive Director of Museums Aotearoa.
‘Our museums and their staff create some fabulous exhibitions and collections and these awards are an opportunity for
the sector to really celebrate the innovative and inspiring work that they do in preserving our culture and history’.
Entries close on 1 April at which time the judging panels will convene to deliberate on the entries and select the
finalists, their decision will then be reviewed by an overview panel who will also decide on a winner for the ‘Museum
Project Excellence’ Award.
All finalists will be notified by late April and the Award ceremony will form part of the Museums Aotearoa Annual
Conference programme.
This year, the awards are again being generously sponsored by ServiceIQ, the industry training organisation for the
sector.
The judges for 2019 are as follows:
Exhibition Excellence: Art: Heather Galbraith, Aaron Kreisler and Priscilla Pitts
Exhibition Excellence: Science and Technology: Tom Trnski, Vasiti Palavi, Philip Howe and Steven Fox
Exhibition Excellence: Social History: Jock Phillips, Paul Diamond and Tryphena Cracknell
Exhibition Excellence: Taonga Maori and Most Innovative Use of Te Reo Maori: Ngarino Ellis, Paora Tibble, Henriata Nicholas and Āwhina Twomey
Most Innovative Education Programme: Christina Ward, Wayne Ngata and Julie Catchpole
Most Innovative Public Programme: Leanne Wickham, Jane Legget and Nils Pokel
MSAANZ Best New Product or Range: Angela Doake, Larry McInerney, Glenn Reddiex and Colin McFetridge.
A panel from Art Access Aoteaora will also sponsor and judge an Award.
