Job opportunities in many of the country’s service sectors show no sign of slowing according to new regional economic
updates released by ServiceIQ, Industry Training Organisation for tourism, travel, retail, retail supply chain,
aviation, hospitality and museums.
The ITO’s Regional Roadmap updates show forecast employment growth across the industry from 2019 to 2024, along with
business and GDP data sourced from Infometrics.
The information shows the highest number of new job openings are in tourism, retail and retail supply chain (aka
distribution) and the cafés, bars and restaurants sector.
Between now and 2024, Auckland’s service sector will have 23,407 new job openings, the highest in the country, while the
Queenstown-Lakes District is set to be the fastest growing at 27.9%.
ServiceIQ CEO Andrew McSweeney says the massive number of job openings across the regions shows that workplace training
is more important than ever before.
“With a lot of new recruits entering the industry, it’s vitally important they get the right skills not only to do a
great job but also to help them use the opportunity to start building a career by learning while they earn,” says
Andrew.
The updates are a follow-up to the Regional Roadmaps that ServiceIQ launched at Parliament in 2017 to help address a
looming skills shortage in New Zealand’s retail, hospitality, aviation, travel, tourism and museum industries.
“People can see at a glance how each region is tracking along with the action plans and initiatives that local
government and business organisations have undertaken to help build a talent pool to meet new growth.”
To help attract the right people into industry, ServiceIQ contributes in several ways. This includes working with
secondary schools and industry to offer students a wide range of Gateway programmes that give them real hands-on experience of what it’s like to work in retail, hospitality, aviation and tourism, and
launching the new limited credit on-job training programmes that give people the essential skills they need for retail,
tourism and hospitality roles.
