Tech law firm Simmonds Stewart invites intern applications

Today, technology law firm Simmonds Stewart launched its 2019 techlaw intern programme in conjunction with the Law School at the University of Auckland. The programme, first run in 2018, offers law students paid intern positions at companies in the high-growth tech sector. The programme is a first for New Zealand law students (and, as far as we can tell, worldwide).

The aim is to provide law students interested in technology and entrepreneurship with real-world experience in the tech sector. The 2018 programme placed five students with tech companies and Simmonds Stewart is expanding the programme to place eight Auckland University law students in intern roles in 2019.

Each student will be paid to provide up to 100 hours of basic legal work for a tech company. Participating companies include Stretchsense, Crimson Education, Pacific Channel and Auckland UniServices. Simmonds Stewart will provide training to participating students, as well as pairing the student with a Simmonds Stewart buddy who will support the student and supervise their work where required.

Victoria Stewart, Simmonds Stewart’s CEO, says that “we’re excited to offer an expanded techlaw programme for 2019. We have an exciting line up of participating companies, all keen to work with law students. It is a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved.
