Affordable, reliable rides help tackle drink driving
Cheers to that! Affordable, reliable rides help tackle drink driving among Kiwis
By Amanda Gilmore, Country Manager, Uber New Zealand
At Uber, we’re passionate about making our cities safer to get around. New research shows that we’re helping people make better choices on a night out.
According to a new report by Empirica Research, 82% of Kiwi riders believe Uber helps reduce drink driving in their community and for those who drive, two-thirds (68%) say it’s helped them personally avoid drink driving.
Around a quarter (24%) of New Zealand riders said they go out socially more now that Uber is available, and 53% report they are less likely to drive themselves on a night out. After a night out, four in five riders says they always or mostly use Uber to get home.
The report also found that drink driving, along with speeding, was a top concern amongst Kiwis.
It’s great to hear from people that Uber is succeeding in providing Kiwis with a safe, reliable way to make their way home in the seven cities in which we operate. That doesn’t mean we can’t make our roads even safer.
Uber has been working with Cheers! on promoting responsible drinking to Kiwis. Matt Claridge from Cheers! adds: “Whether you choose the Uber app, or public transport, or a combination of both - there’s always a better option than getting behind the wheel after drinking, or in the car of someone who has.
“We are pleased to see so many Kiwis turning to alternative options to get home - as getting behind the wheel after drinking is dangerous for all road users.”
Uber is now available in seven cities around New Zealand, and we’re proud to help thousands of Kiwis get a safe ride home each weekend.
