Real Groovy On the Move

Published: Fri 18 Jan 2019 01:26 PM
Real Groovy is moving from its home of the last three years at 369 Queen St, previously a Salvation Army Citadel, further up the hill to 520 Queen St.
369 Queen St is being developed into apartments by Conrad properties, who had previously ousted Real Groovy from 438 Queen street to build the Queens Square apartments.
520 is the sixth Queen St location that the store has had in the past thirty years. With this move the store’s future is secured for at least another eight years. Previous leases were subject to demolition clauses so the owners are glad to now have security of tenure.
Real Groovy has consolidated over the past ten years and is riding the wave of the vinyl revival, selling new and used LPs and Turntables, as well as CDs and DVDs, Books and Pop Culture collectibles. LP record sales have been growing at 20% per year for the past decade, both with baby boomers revisiting the format, and a new wave of serious young music fans who appreciate the superior sound of analogue recordings.
The new store is still large at 500 square metres and the company has a further 400 m2 on the fifth level for its website, stock processing and storage needs. It opened on January 11th and the old store will be open as an outlet store on weekends for several weeks to dispose of over 20,000 used LPs, 80,000 used 45s, and thousands of CDs and DVDs.
Real Groovy was founded in 1981 by Chris Priestley and the current owner, Chris Hart, and has been Auckland’s pre-eminent music store ever since.
