Summer sees record numbers of international travellers arriving to Wellington Airport
A record number of international travellers are expected to pass through Wellington Airport over the summer period.
Approximately 70,000 visitors will fly into the airport over summer, an increase of 9% compared to the previous year.
The busiest day for international movements through the airport will be Sunday 6 January, with almost 4,500 international seats over 24 flights operated by six airlines. Friday 21st December and Friday 4th January will also be particularly busy.
Mike Vincent, Wellington Airport’s Airline Development Manager, says the majority of international air visitors to Wellington will use Trans-Tasman services.
“Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane flights with their connections from around the world will carry the highest numbers of visitors to the capital. Wellington is a popular destination for summer short-breaks for Australians, and long-haul visitors are increasingly using the city as a starting point for their New Zealand adventures.”
“Over the last 12 months, the airport has seen continued growth in long-haul visitors, particularly from Asia, which are up 18 per cent. The Singapore Airlines’ service from Singapore via Melbourne and Qantas’ enhanced connecting options via Sydney and Melbourne has generated more travellers in the last year including from Singapore up 60 per cent, India up 25 per
cent and Indonesia up 14 per cent.”
Wellington Airport advises travellers to leave plenty of time to get the airport and plan ahead by checking Wellington Airport’s website for the latest flight information, book parking ahead of time and check baggage allowances prior to arrival.
