Conference should focus on carbon capture and storage
Just Transitions conference should focus on carbon capture and storage
The Just Transitions conference to be held
in Taranaki next year should include a focus on carbon
capture and storage technology, says the Petroleum
Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand
(PEPANZ).
"It’s encouraging to see a focus on the best
ways to lower emissions and minimise the impact of the
transition on communities," says PEPANZ CEO Cameron
Madgwick.
"Our industry has a key part to play in this.
Replacing coal with natural gas, offsetting and lowering
emissions as well as carbon capture and storage (CCS) are
some of the ways we are meeting this challenge.
"CCS is a reality today around the world and a project in Taranaki has been proposed. However, for it to happen in New Zealand we need a comprehensive regulatory framework. This will surely be an important topic at the conference.
"The future role
of natural gas as a lower carbon energy source should also
be an important topic, given global demand is expected to
grow 45% by 2040. By developing New Zealand’s resources we
can help other countries replace coal and lower their
emissions, a win-win scenario for the economy and
environment.
