Hopper Home Eco Shop
Hopper Home Eco Shop has officially opened on 15 November 2018.The newly opened Hopper Home Eco Shop is a
community-orientated shop focusing on bulk food, up-cycled goods and refillable household products. The shop aims to cut
down on waste and packaging by offering refillables and working closely with local suppliers.
Hopper Home Eco Shop is also a space for community connection, offering workshops and alternatives to help reduce waste
in the community. The workshops include a repair cafe, making your own beeswax wraps, eco cosmetics and clothes swaps.
Throughout December you can come and make your own personalised Christmas cracker at the shop or purchase their locally
made eco Christmas crackers.
Hopper Home Eco Shop was initiated by Susie Brow, Director of Hopper Home Enterprise, a new social enterprise in
Wellington which owns a whole building in Mt Cook Wellington, supporting waste minimisation groups and initiatives. She
believes many of our current mental health problems stem from today’s wasteful attitude. ”Wasteful use of resources and
disregard for the importance of nature leave us believing we don’t need to be mindful of the source of things - which
eventually and naturally leads us to think that caring for each other and ourselves is unimportant also. This paradigm
of thinking must change, and people are hungry for this change” (Susie Brow)
The Shop is the public face of Hopper Home Enterprise where there are refillable foods and household cleaning products,
up-cycled goods and locally made products. Hopper Home Eco Shop is co-managed by Ali Kirkpatrick and Sarah Child who
co-ordinate the Wellington Boomerang Bags Community and are key members of the group “Waste-Ed” a social enterprise
focusing on education and awareness around waste streams in Wellington and New Zealand. “We encourage people to let us
know what they want at the shop, and we are particularly interested to hear from anyone making items from things that
were otherwise destined for the wastestream.“ (Sarah Child) All of the nett profits from the shop go back to funding the
Hopper Home Enterprise.
The eco shop is located on 11 Hopper St Wellington and open Tuesday-Friday, 10am-6pm and Saturday-Sunday, 10am-5pm
