RNZ Audiences Increase Year on Year
The final nationwide GfK radio industry survey for 2018 reflects a strong twelve months for RNZ with year-on-year growth for live listening across the two networks RNZ National and RNZ Concert.
The survey results show that typically 679,500 New Zealanders or 16% of the 10+ population are tuned in to RNZ each week - an increase of 34,300 year-on-year.
Among all radio listening in New Zealand, RNZ National has a market share of 12.1% and a cumulative audience of 603,800 listeners, an increase of 17,100 compared to the equivalent survey last year.
Results in the highly competitive Breakfast period (Monday to Friday 6am – 9am) show Morning Report increased audiences by 12,100 year-on-year, reaching 457,800 listeners. This is a market share of 15.4% of the total radio listening audience at that time of day.
RNZ Concert is also up compared to 2017 with a weekly cumulative audience of 173,200 people or 4.1% of the 10-plus population. This is an increase of 27,400 year-on-year for the network.
RNZ Head of Radio and Music, David Allan, said the results were a reflection of the strong performances by RNZ programmes over the past twelve months and provide a great platform for new RNZ National programming to be introduced in 2019.
“Our programming initiatives include a 5 AM news and current affairs show being launched next year, which will give Morning Report a strong lead-in, and we’ll also be announcing additional refreshment for RNZ National before Christmas.”
The multi-media broadcaster has also achieved strong results across digital channels. More than 608,000 users accessed the RNZ website during a typical week, and more than 203,000 video streams took place on RNZ platforms. Collaborative partnerships with other major media organisations, including Stuff, NZME, MSN, TVNZ and Bauer, have added new audiences and extended the reach for RNZ content.
