The challenge for business from employment figures

Congratulations to the Government, and in particular the agencies that assist in placing people into work, by recording the lowest unemployment figures in a decade.

However, the flipside to this is the huge pressure it places on businesses looking to employ staff, says Auckland Business Chamber CEO Michael Barnett.

“Almost half of the 1,000 SME’s recently surveyed by the Auckland Chamber from across the top half of the North Island are actively looking to employ staff right now to take advantage of opportunities for growth and expansion.

“They’re also saying it is getting harder to find skilled staff,” says Barnett.

“To help address this, the Minister of Immigration needs to work with business in the regions to develop a database of skill shortages based on regional needs rather than national ones.”
