Commission demystifying broadband for New Zealanders

The Commerce Commission has today released three videos to help New Zealanders navigate the often complex world of broadband options.

The videos cover how to choose your broadband technology, how to improve your broadband speed and performance, and how to resolve problems with your telecommunications provider.

“Consumers view the internet as an essential service but are in the dark about many of the basics,” Telecommunications Commissioner Dr Stephen Gale says.

“We hope our practical tips and simple water pipe analogy will help take some of the stress out of choosing between different broadband technologies.”

“We also want to help consumers troubleshoot issues before contacting their telco, and show them where to go next if they are at loggerheads with their provider.”

The videos reflect the Commission's increased focus on making information on telecommunications services accessible and digestible for consumers. They are presented by former Fair Go host Gordon Harcourt, who is a member of the Commission’s communications team.

The Commission is also running a programme to measure the in-home broadband performance of 3000 Kiwi households. Initial results from the programme will be available before Christmas.

The new broadband videos can be viewed on the broadband page of the Commission website.
