New World wins big at Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition
We’ve been banging on about how good our store-made sausages are for years, and now we’ve snagged the top honour.
New World Te Rapa in Hamilton wins Supreme Sausage for 2018 in the Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition, with plenty of other New World medallists.
“We knocked it out of the park with our Angus Beef Sausage,” says New World Te Rapa owner Chris Grace, “and we couldn’t be more chuffed. The butchery team is headed up by Butchery Manager Chris Nicol who can’t wait to share the good news with our customers.”
Virtually every New World has an in-store butchery team who pride themselves on delivering the absolute best day in, day out. The fact that so many stores have won 9 awards in the Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition is independent proof of the superb standard customers have come to expect from our stores.
David Stewart, GM Merchandise Foodstuffs North Island, was excited with the news that New World had topped the pool. “We have our own fiercely contested sausage competition and are rightly proud of what our store butchers achieve every day – but with this one we go up against every other sausage maker worth their salt (or seasoning), and we’ve come up with a bunch of winners. There’s no secret to our success – it’s simply down to understanding what customers want, which is flavoursome sausages, freshly made from the best ingredients.
Other New World winners include:
Gold: New World Stonefields (Auckland), Smokey Chicken, Coriander & Garlic
Silver: New World Stonefields (Auckland), Chicken, Coriander, Garlic & Mild Chilli
Gold: New World Stanmore (Christchurch), Roast Beef, Horseradish & Beetroot
Silver: New World Stanmore (Christchurch), Italian Pork
Bronze: New World Bishopdale (Christchurch), Pork Breakfast
Silver: New World Greenmeadows (Napier), Beef, Truffle & Parmesan
Bronze: New World Greenmeadows (Napier), Pork Flavoured
Bronze: New World Havelock North, Pork & Paua
With summer winging its way to a BBQ near you, it’s great to know your local New World has a range of store-made, award-winning deliciousness ready to pile over the charcoal.
Hints and tips for cooking a sausage on the BBQ
Give the sausages a minute or two over high heat to brown them.
After a minute or so on both sides, turn the heat down and arrange your sausages as far from the heat source as possible or close the lid if you have one. Basically, you are letting the BBQ roast the meat.
Sausages will cook in 10-15 minutes depending on thickness. If you have one, use a meat thermometer and remove sausages from the BBQ once they reach an interior temperature of around 70 degrees.
