Awards demonstrate that sound environmental management is good business
Entries are now open for the 2018/19 Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards, launched today at the Rangitane Cultural Centre, Grovetown.
Cawthron Institute Director, Dr Di McCarthy says that Cawthron Institute is proud to support the awards, which showcase Marlborough business or community projects that protect and enhance the environment.
“Cawthron Institute aims to make a positive difference to our environment and sponsoring the Awards is a way for us to encourage sound environmental management,” says Dr McCarthy. “Our involvement with the Awards over the past five years has enabled us to support a range of projects, initiatives and best practice within the community and businesses.”
While it is great to celebrate good practices, the Marlborough Environment Awards go that next step to inspire and encourage others through the telling of stories. The knowledge and experience of award recipients is shared with the community through a series of field days.
“Here at Cawthron we focus on enabling industry growth while enhancing our local environment. Many entrants for the Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards are doing just that and we applaud them for their commitment.”
The awards have been running for 20 years, during which time 246 organisations have entered. For many, entering the Environment Awards makes them look at their operations through a fresh set of eyes and interacting with the expert judges is a learning experience.
“Cawthron Institute is committed to the ‘top of the south’ region. Our association with Marlborough goes back many decades and a lot of our important research is based here. I am looking forward to joining our fellow sponsors of the Environment Awards and being inspired by some great initiatives this year,” says Dr McCarthy.
The closing date for entries into the Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards is 28 September 2018.

The Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards are held every two years to showcase businesses or community projects that are good for the environment. They are supported by the Cawthron Institute, Marlborough District Council and other local sponsors. The Awards are open to any business, community group or individual in Marlborough. Judges are looking for entrants who protect and enhance the environment and use resources and energy efficiently.
Cawthron Institute was established in 1919 after the death of Nelson businessman Thomas Cawthron, who left the bulk of his fortune to establish a science institute in his name. He believed that science held the key to solving New Zealand’s environmental and food production problems. This legacy continues and today the Cawthron Institute is New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation.
Cawthron scientists have expertise in aquaculture research, marine and freshwater resource management, food safety and quality, algal technologies, biosecurity and analytical testing.
