Technology Powers Up New Zealand Apple and Pear Industry
New Zealand’s apple and pear industry has
embraced technology to enable more of its members to
virtually attend its Annual General Meeting this week and
exercise their democratic rights.
New Zealand Apples and Pears chief executive Alan Pollard said the decision to introduce online voting and invest in a video link for members to connect to the AGM had boosted participation and interest when the meeting was held in Christchurch.
“As an industry body we represent the voice of growers and technology is enabling this where members are able to be more active and engaged.
“Our growers and exporters are busy running their own businesses so new technology is keeping us better connected.
“Over time we’ve seen attendance drop at our AGMs, where depending on where members lived meant travelling between the North and South Islands in alternative years.
“Until now, for members not attending our AGM, they had to appoint a proxy and as part of this provide verification of their fruit production figures, which had created challenges.
“Online voting had increased turnout and also provided quick access to accurate member information. We were greatly encouraged by the many members who also watched the AGM online which shows technology is working for us by enabling engagement and participation.”
Under NZAPI constitution it was still required to hold a ballot vote for those wanting to exercise their democratic right at the AGM.
New Zealand Apples & Pears board directors Peter Beaven and Cameron Taylor were reappointed for another two-year term as growers representatives at the AGM in Christchurch this week.
