Macca’s local and export shopping bill tops $360
million in 2017
From Ingham
chicken and McCain’s fries, to locally grown lettuce and
tomatoes, McDonald’s shopping list looks a lot like the
average Kiwis, with one exception: the final bill which saw
$155 million spent on local produce in 2017.
McDonald’s isn’t just purchasing for New Zealand either. Overseas McDonald’s markets including Australia, the United States and Asia, purchased a further $207 million of Kiwi produce, taking the total amount earned by Kiwi suppliers to $362 million.
Breaking down those New Zealand numbers and putting them into perspective:
• McDonald’s sourced over 91 million buns, rolls,
bagels and muffins - that’s over four times the number of
sheep in New Zealand
• Over 815,000 kgs of lettuce was
used - that’s comparable to the weight of 402,500 pairs of
gumboots
• 12.8 million free range eggs were used -
3.7 times more eggs than there are visitors to New Zealand
in the same period
• In addition to the 5.5 million kgs
of beef used locally, another 33 million kilo’s heads
overseas – that’s almost ten percent of New Zealand’s
beef exports
• 1.7 million kgs of cheese & other dairy,
the equivalent of two Airbus A380’s, went into
McDonald’s burgers, McMuffins, wraps and
bagels
“New Zealand has some of the best produce in
the world so it’s a no brainer that we look in our own
backyard first when selecting quality ingredients for our
menu,” said Dave Howse, McDonald’s New Zealand
managing director.
“We’re proud of the long term relationships we have built with suppliers across the country and the fact we are able to share their produce with McDonald’s restaurants worldwide is an added benefit.”
The 2017 McDonald's NZ supply chain shopping list includes:
• 5.5 million kg of beef (including 747,000kg Angus beef) – sourced from farms across the country and made into patties by ANZCO Foods in Waitara, Taranaki
