On Friday 11 May, at Auckland’s Sky City, Stuff NZ Christchurch won a Best in Process award at the annual Pride In Print
Awards for their Nelson Mail Motoring publication.
Print manager Jason Laine says that Stuff has won awards in the past, but this is their first process award and
something that he is very proud of.
“It was effectively judged best concept publication of the year, which is a fairly big accolade. It proves to the guys
that they are doing good work, and I know they take a lot of pride in what they do. It’s great to be recognised,” says
Mr Laine.
The annual Pride In Print Awards, now in their 25th year, is the printing and graphic arts industry’s premier awards
event with judging carried out by key printing industry experts and peers.
Judge Arthur Lenssen says that given the tight production deadlines associated with printing newspapers, this entry is a
“verification of what the Pride In Print awards represent, and a nod to old-fashioned craftsmanship."
Mr Laine acknowledges that tight deadlines are a challenge — mainly if something goes awry.
“If something goes wrong, there is still a deadline to meet, no ifs or buts.”
In the case of this entry, an insert in one of Stuff’s daily newspapers, Mr Laine says the process was seamless; overall
printing took only about 40 minutes.
"It starts from the beginning. If the publication is well-designed and laid out from the get-go, things are much easier
for us."
Mr Laine says that the designers of the publication understood the printing process, and when everyone works cohesively,
you can get a winning result.
“The guys here are absolutely stoked to win this award and to receive this sort of recognition.”
