Federated Farmers believes the make-up of the Interim Climate Change Committee announced this afternoon puts some
significant scientific thinking on the case.
"This should mean we can figure out once and for all just what the obligations are New Zealand has to meet, not just for
agriculture, but for all of us.
"We are all emitters," Federated Farmers Climate Change spokesperson Andrew Hoggard says.
Feds believes the committee members have a good mix of skill sets between them.
"They all know their stuff.
"And a couple of them are very familiar with agribusiness and the challenges faced every day by farmers, especially
given the limited range of tools available to reduce emissions."
The committee has a comprehensive terms of reference to follow and it does not suggest the inclusion of agriculture in
the Emissions Trading Scheme will be a forgone conclusion.
Feds was also pleased to see the committee has been given a longer length of time to report back, not until next April.
"This is not something we should be pushing to get done within an unrealistic timeframe."
