Climate committee shows balance
BusinessNZ has welcomed the announcement of the Interim Climate Change Committee.
Chief Executive Kirk Hope says BusinessNZ member companies look forward to working with the committee as it makes decisions that will be critical for New Zealand’s future.
"Key decisions include how and when agriculture enters the emissions trading scheme, how we transition to 100 percent renewable electricity generation by 2035, and how we might best become a net zero emissions economy by 2050."
The interim committee will begin consultation on those issues prior to the establishment of the Climate Change Commission next year.
Kirk Hope said the appointment of Committee Chair Dr David Prentice, previous Chair of the BusinessNZ infrastructure subgroup, and the committee’s scientific and economic credentials gave confidence that its work would serve the New Zealand economy in a balanced way.
