WORK EXPERIENCE BEFORE YOU GRADUATE - STUDENT VOLUNTEER WEEK 2018
Today marks the start of Student Volunteer Week (SVW) 2018. Throughout this week, volunteer centres, universities and schools across New Zealand will host a variety of events and awareness-raising activities that will help connect skilled and willing volunteers with organisations in need.
The theme of this 2018 campaign is ‘Give. Grow. Inspire’ and aims to encourage students to give their time to volunteering, grow their skills through these experiences, and inspire others in their community to do the same.
While volunteering is all about helping others, this week is also a great time to explore the benefits of volunteering for students.
“Volunteering is a great way to put your learning in context,” says Volunteering New Zealand’s (VNZ) campaign manager, Ione Slater who is also studying toward a Master of Communication through Massey University.
“It allows students to explore their interests and find their niche. It’s the perfect way to get work experience before you graduate,” Ms Slater added.
The benefits don’t stop there, the results of Deloitte research showed that 82% of employers preferred applicants with volunteering experience (Fisher, 2016). Through volunteering, students develop skills which shine through on resumes.
VNZ’s chief executive, Scott Miller, added that “our SVW 2018 campaign has been entirely student led. Engaging student volunteers for roles which they are passionate about can only result in the best outcomes for all involved”.
