Canterbury and Marlborough students heading to Invercargill grand final
A talented due from St Bede’s College has taken top honours at the Tasman TeenAg Regional Final in Christchurch.
Nick O’Connor and Angus Grant won the hotly-contested TeenAg event in Templeton on Saturday.
The event saw 44 teams clash at Innovation Park.
Tomos Blunt and Finn Taylor, who’re also from St Bede’s College in Christchurch, took out second place.
Both teams have qualified for theTeenAgGrand Final in Invercargill.
“I can’t wait,” said Angus, who’s 15. “Last year I just missed out on going to grand final, so I’m stoked.”
Flynn Shore, James Crawford and Hillary Cooper from Oxford Area School in Canterbury won the fiercely-contestedAgriKidsNZcontest.
That event saw 24 teams tackle fun challenges testing their practical and theoretical skills.
“It was a great day out. I really enjoyed it,” said Hillary.
The aim of the event is to get kids excited about a career in the primary industries, said competition co-ordinator David Highsted.
Harry Carrodus, Jake Lawson and Hannah Buck from Seddon School near Blenheim placed second.
William Knight, Nathan Hodge and Rebecca Lewis from Broomfield School in North Canterbury were third.
All three teams have qualified for theAgriKidsNZGrand Final in Invercargill.
“I’m really excited to be heading to Invercargill,” said Flynn.
Both national finals will take place alongside the prestigious FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in July.
TeenAg and AgriKidsNZ are a key part of the work being done by NZ Young Farmers to attract students into the agri-food sectors.
