Cashless tolls popular with Kiwis in campervans

A new cashless payment system for more than 80,000 Kiwis travelling in campervans is set to be rolled out across New Zealand, following a highly successful Auckland trial.
The digital payment system by Christchurch-based company GeoZone for New Zealand Motorhome and Campervan Association members replaces an “iron casket” system where $3 is placed into the locked casket.
Now, digital payment through the NZMCA Travel app is being rolled out to the association’s 30 sites after a successful trial at Ardmore in Auckland.
In the first few weeks of the pilot, 16 percent of revenue for the site was made via the app with this number growing every day as more members familiarise themselves with the payment process.
GeoZone founder Adam Hutchinson says the payment tech is being tested across the wider industry and is yet another example of the company’s use of technology to solve problems in the tourism industry.
“The benefits for NZMCA members with this new feature is that they don't have to worry about getting cash out in an increasingly cashless society. They can simply pay through the app and have the fees charged to their credit card.
"Using mobile payment technology just makes sense in 2018. Working with a strong and engaged organisation such as NZMCA has meant we can roll out this technology quickly and successfully".
NZMCA chief executive Bruce Lochore says the new feature has already been a hit.
“This has been very well received by our members. As an organisation we are always looking at ways to make their lives and travels easier."
The new feature is available now on the NZMCA Travel app for its members.
GeoZone won the Innovation in Tourism & Entertainment category at the Innovation Awards 2017.
