MEDIA RELEASE:
Seequent hosts Mexican Ambassador to NZ; sets sights on new opportunities in region
Focus on renewable energy, mining and minerals, and civil and environmental sectors
CHRISTCHURCH, NZ – April 4, 2018 – Seequent (formerly ARANZ Geo), a world leader in the development of data visualisation software, has hosted Ambassador of Mexico
to New Zealand, H.E. José Gerardo Traslosheros Hernández at their global headquarters in Christchurch to discuss strong
market growth and future opportunities in Mexico.
Shaun Maloney, Seequent’s Chief Executive, says: “Mexico is a very attractive and engaging market. Its rich natural
resource base and renewable energy potential is attracting foreign investment and creating new opportunities. Renewable
energy is a great example; as with other countries, Mexico is embracing the importance of developing geothermal not just
as an energy replacement source, but to future proof base load energy needs for the future.
“Mexico is one of our fastest growing markets and represents a great opportunity as the world’s 13th largest economy.
We’re continuing to invest in people and skills in the region.”
H.E. Traslosheros Hernández says: “I’m impressed by the innovation component of New Zealand business. Mexico’s wide
variety of natural resources, skilled workforce and proximity to some of the largest consumption areas provides a lot of
opportunity between Mexico and New Zealand.
We can improve our ability to respond to new demands and build our competitive position by connecting with technology
innovators, like Seequent.”
Seequent’s technology is contributing to the modelling, understanding and management of geological risk for earth,
environment and energy projects in 85 countries around the globe.
Maloney says, “Importantly, this means we can apply knowledge from a global source to help meet new challenges. In the
geothermal sector, for example, we’ve learned a great deal working with not just the New Zealand geothermal market, but
also with our customers globally who represent 40% of the world’s installed geothermal capacity.”
Seequent first introduced its Leapfrog® 3D geological modelling software to the mining and minerals industry over 10 years ago. The company now has solutions
for a wide range of industries including geothermal and renewable energy, civil engineering, and environmental
management.
The mining and minerals sector continues to play an important role in Seequent’s business in Mexico and it counts many
of the top mining operators as customers.
“We have a long link with Mexico. Mining operations in Mexico are great adopters of innovation and were among the first
supporters of our software globally,” says Seequent’s GM Mining and Minerals Nick Fogarty.
“While, mining has experienced a once in a generation downturn over the past few years, we’ve still experienced market
growth. We’re now seeing more activity as commodity prices increase and the market starts to recover. Increased
investment in natural resource exploration is driving mining operations look to adopt innovative technology that helps
drive both efficiency and sustainability.”
Renewable energy development in Mexico is also generating new opportunities. H.E. Traslosheros Hernández says, “Mexico
is responding to global energy challenges by developing new renewable energy sources. In terms of geothermal energy, we
already have a number of geothermal power stations, and new developments are underway.”
Jeremy O’Brien, Seequent’s Geothermal Business Manager, says: “The energy market in Mexico is really opening up on the
back of landmark reforms. This is driving demand for more diversified and cleaner energy resources. We’re already
working with some of the largest geothermal companies and look forward to supporting the development of new geothermal
assets to add capacity.”
Seequent recently launched Leapfrog Works to bring its 3D modelling and visualisation capabilities to the civil
engineering and environmental industries. The technology brings together the disparate processes of designing
infrastructure and ground engineering to improve understanding, visualisation and communication of subsurface conditions
and the interaction with infrastructure.
Daniel Wallace, GM Civil and Environmental, says: “Customers in 15 countries across North America, Europe and Asia
Pacific are already using Leapfrog Works to enable better design and construction decisions. Seequent’s global reach
will support the growth of this newer part of the business into emerging markets.”
Maloney says that the key to growth in an ever expanding range of industries has been a focus on solving problems for
customers and helping them succeed.
