Stellar Line Up for Low Emissions Conference

The Energy Management Association of New Zealand today revealed its first release of speaker details for its landmark conference in Auckland in May.

The “Energising a Low Emissions Economy” themed conference couldn’t be better timed. By May, the Productivity Commission will have published its draft report on how New Zealand can transition to a low emissions economy and the Government will be well into its consultation process on a Zero Carbon Act. The Chair of the Productivity Commission, Murray Sherwin, is one of the speakers being announced today, along with Rachel Brown (CEO, Sustainable Business Network), Andrew Caseley (CEO, EECA) and Andrew Eagles (CEO, New Zealand Green Building Council).

Mike Hopkins, CEO of EMANZ announced the line up and highlighted the significance of the first, overseas Keynote speaker to be revealed. “We’re delighted to welcome Steve Nadel as a Keynote. Steve is CEO of the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy and is a world expert on how energy efficiency can strengthen an economy as well as help deliver on emissions reduction targets”. “Many other countries have an easier route to hitting Paris targets”, he continued, “they can make substantial improvements just by shifting their electricity generation mix. We’re already 85% renewable, so we need to work smarter to achieve our target. Energy efficiency is often referred to as the fifth fuel and is a critical component in helping New Zealand reach its emissions reduction targets. Improved efficiency delivers cost savings as well as reductions in a company’s carbon footprint, the proverbial win-win.

It’s wonderful that the energy efficiency message and how it can contribute towards our national goals and national image is being picked up outside the energy community. We need to extend that reach even further and welcome delegates from all business sectors to the conference to learn how they can save money and reduce emissions.”
