New Trustees Announced at Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision

Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision has announced the appointment of four new members to its Board of Trustees.
Te Raumawhitu Kupenga – former lawyer and senior executive
Whetu Fala – respected producer, director of content, broadcaster and Māori Television board member
Emily Loughnan – interactive industry pioneer
Lisa Bates, MNZM – culture and art sector governance expert
These appointments follow the retirement of Judith Fyfe, Derek Fox and former Chair Jane Kominik, and the resignation of Peter Douglas, who left to take up a position in the public service. Ms Kominik, Ms Fyfe and Mr Fox had all served two three-year terms on the Ngā Taonga Board.

Board Chair, Simon Murdoch welcomed all the new Trustees.

“We are very pleased to have attracted Trustees of such high calibre. They will bring to Ngā Taonga a wealth of relevant expertise and experience and, together with current trustee, Edie Moke, ensure we realise our vision and potential as the audiovisual archive for all New Zealanders,” said Mr Murdoch.

Mr Murdoch also thanked the outgoing Trustees for their service to the Archive.

“All four members made an invaluable contribution during their, sometimes very challenging, time on the Board. They served during a period of significant change for Ngā Taonga when a new amalgamated organisation was created from the separate radio, television and film archives. Their strong vision and commitment to the work of the Archive will be missed.”

“I also want to extend a special thank you to Jane Kominik, on behalf of not just the organisation, but everyone who cares about our audiovisual taonga. Jane was elected Chair soon after joining the board in July 2011 and her wise and steady leadership during a time of such dramatic change always inspired confidence that the organisation was heading in the right direction,” said Mr Murdoch.

* Ms Bates was co-opted to the board in July 2017, before the official commencement of her term, to provide expertise in support of the organisation’s fundraising activities.

Trustee Biographies

Simon Murdoch (Chair)
Simon has a distinguished career as a diplomat and public servant. He was a Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 2002 to 2009, New Zealand High Commissioner in Canberra from 1999 to 2002 and Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet from 1991 to 1998. He started his career in foreign affairs in 1972, serving in New Zealand and overseas until his retirement in 2009.

Simon remains involved in several projects and activities including public sector reviews, consultancy services in crisis management, national security and intelligence. He holds governance positions on several public entities. Simon was awarded the honour of Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009.
He is a graduate of Canterbury University with a BA in English and American Studies and an MA with First Class Honours in American Studies.

Lisa Bates, MNZM
Lisa has worked in the New Zealand arts sector for over 25 years and is an independent company director and a chartered member of the Institute of Directors. Lisa is currently a director of the Regional Facilities Auckland Board – the Council-controlled organisation that governs most of the city’s iconic arts and recreation assets, a trustee of the Mackelvie Trust, one of Auckland’s largest public art collections and in January 2018 became a trustee of the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Having served for six years as a director of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Board, she remains a trustee of the NZSO Foundation. She has contributed to fundraising strategies for most major arts organisations. She received the Fundraiser of the Year award for her Q Theatre work in 2010 and, in 2017, was awarded a New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the arts and philanthropy. Lisa works in the field of marketing and communications as executive director of the design and brand agency Hawkins & Co.

Whetu Fala
Whetu sits on the board of Māori Television. She is also a well-known figure in the screen and broadcasting industries in Aotearoa and overseas and brings an impressive array of skills, including experience in front of and behind the camera and as a writer. She has produced, directed and edited hundreds of hours of television, including drama, documentaries, reality series and short films in Aotearoa starting at TVNZ in 1988. Whetu also owns her own media company, fala media.

Te Raumawhitu Kupenga
Te Rau has a legal background, having worked previously as a lawyer specialising in litigation, as well as holding senior solicitor positions at the Office of the Māori Trustee and in a commercial law firm in Wellington. He has worked as a television presenter and was a regular panellist on a lifestyle television show. In 2011, Te Rau was appointed to the Board of the Broadcasting Standards Authority. Previously Te Rau has held the position of Deputy Secretary for the Environment, at the Ministry for the Environment, and been part of the Senior Leadership Team at the Ministry of Education. Te Rau now works as a consultant providing strategic and general advice to the private and public sectors.

Emily Loughnan
Emily is the co-founder of Click Suite, a company specialising in developing interactive exhibitions, as well as websites and apps. Prior to forming Click Suite, Emily had a very successful television career including leading large and complex projects for TVNZ and NZ On Air where she commissioned $50m of television programmes annually. Emily has been a pioneer in the interactive industry and was appointed to the Prime Minister’s Growth and Innovation Advisory Board. Emily is passionate about new technology and is a popular speaker on the subject at various events.

Edie Moke
Edie has been a professional director for over 15 years, with considerable experience as a business development and accounting consultant in both the public and private sectors. Her governance experience crosses several sectors, including health, broadcasting, early childhood education and philanthropy. She served three terms with the Broadcasting Commission: NZ On Air and one term as Deputy Chair. She also served one term as the founding Chair of NZ On Screen from 2007 to 2010. Edie is currently an appointed Director on two District Health Boards, for the West Coast and South Canterbury regions.
