Housing NZ opens doors to new Mount Albert homes

Housing NZ opens doors to new Mount Albert homes

Housing New Zealand today gave immediate neighbours and local community stakeholders a sneak preview of its new 18-home redevelopment in Mount Albert’s Jennings Street and Jersey Avenue.

The ‘open home’ event was an opportunity to take a tour through a two and three-bedroom home at the Housing New Zealand property, as well as an accessible unit, and to get a close-up look at modern state housing.

Housing New Zealand’s Asset Development Group general manager, Patrick Dougherty, says the redevelopment is a great example of how Housing New Zealand is bringing its Auckland property portfolio up to date and providing greater numbers of homes in areas of high demand.

“The eight old two-bedroom units at this 3,649 sqm central location were built in 1941 and so were well past their useful life. Now we’ve created 18 warm, dry and healthy homes in their place; it’s a much wiser use of the land and will benefit many more people in need of housing.”

Around 90 people will move into the new homes before Christmas. These new homes are architecturally designed and feature double-glazing, insulation, thermal quality curtains and carpet, modern materials and fittings inside and out, modest yards and planting, including fruit trees.

The redevelopment is in walking distance to Mt Albert town centre, which is currently being upgraded, and train station. It is close to supermarkets, primary, intermediate and secondary schools, Unitec, walking paths and public transportation routes.

Pauline Otunuku is one of the Housing New Zealand tenants moving into the new homes at Jennings Jersey. Her family of eight has previously lived in a two-bedroom Avondale house and Pauline had been waiting for a larger home for a number of years.

“We’re so happy that we’ve got a new house and that it’s a bigger one for us,” says Pauline.

“It’s going to be a good Christmas for us. It’ll be great for each of the kids to have their own room to sleep in.

“The kids can’t talk about anything else. They say: ‘Oh Mum, we don’t want anything for Christmas. We’ve got a new house!’”

Housing New Zealand has around 100 redevelopments of its land underway, or planned, across Auckland.
