New regional retail sales data now available

New regional retail sales data now available

29 November 2017

Stats NZ is now publishing retail sales data for each of New Zealand’s 16 regions.

We redesigned the Retail Trade Survey to make greater use of administrative data, and to reduce the number of retail businesses we survey. An added benefit of this new approach is an improvement to the quality of our regional sales series. Until now, we have only been able to publish data for six regional groupings. Now we can publish quarterly sales data for all 16 regions, which will be available on our website. We have used the new methodology to create regional data back to the June 2011 quarter.

Retail trade survey: September 2017 quarter contains this new regional data.

For the September 2017 quarter, seasonally adjusted sales in the North Island rose 0.2 percent ($40 million). The regional breakdown was:
• Northland, down 1.1 percent ($8 million)
• Auckland, up 0.8 percent ($65 million)
• Waikato, down 1.6 percent ($32 million)
• Bay of Plenty, down 0.7 percent ($9 million)
• Gisborne, up 6.9 percent ($11 million)
• Hawke’s Bay, up 1.9 percent ($13 million)
• Taranaki, up 3.9 percent ($18 million)
• Manawatu-Wanganui, unchanged
• Wellington, down 0.8 percent ($18 million).

In the South Island, sales rose a seasonally adjusted 0.7 percent ($38 million). The regional breakdown was:
