iGenerate gives schools the power to go green
New Zealand schools are being given the chance to use the money they spend on electricity bills to finance solar panels through a new programme just launched by iGenerate Solar.
The new offer means schools can use pre-approved funding to install about 70 panels, which generates about 25,000 kWhs of useable solar power. These panels are estimated to save about $6250 a year and schools can then use this saving to pay off the system.
iGenerate’s Mark Unwin says while schools see the benefit in switching to solar, some of them did not want to make a big upfront capital investment. The seven to 10 year lease-to-own agreement will allow schools to avoid this by using savings generated by the panels.
“Making a big capital investment is not a decision that schools take lightly and nor do they want to be locked into contracts for years to come. By signing up to this agreement schools are avoiding a big cash outlay as their electricity savings pay off the system, and once it is paid off the school will enjoy reduced operating costs.”
He says each school will have its own specific need depending on its location and size, and iGenerate works to develop a tailored solar solution.
“Solar is clean, green power and shows a real commitment to sustainability. It also helps foster a generation of people who instinctively think and act in a sustainable way. The great thing about being part of this programme is that students of tomorrow will also benefit from the decisions made today.
“There are also educational benefits as the students can learn first-hand about the science of how a natural resource like sunlight can be channelled into electricity.”
Schools will also be able to see what savings are made with the system reporting back through the schools internet connection, he says. The agreement with iGenerate also covers maintenance of the system, while the Ministry of Education has confirmed the decision to switch to solar rests with the individual school.
