Hammer Hardware is Kaikoura’s new local

Earthquake damaged Mitre 10 Kaikoura will re-open next Monday as Hammer Hardware Kaikoura, once again serving the local community’s DIY and gardening needs.

Due to significant structural damage suffered by Mitre 10 Kaikoura during the November 2016 earthquake, the Hills Family needed to look for an alternative site to reopen their business.

As a result Roz, Bruce, son James and daughter Cindy have now re-located to a new store and garden centre at the Harakeke Mall on Beach Road, trading as Hammer Hardware Kaikoura, opening on October 16.

The Hills say it’s been a long and difficult process but they are pleased to continue the store’s 80 year legacy of service to the community.

“We’ve been a part of the community for a long time and we know how much they’ve missed the store while it’s been closed,” notes Bruce.

“It’s a shame to see what’s happened to the old store but we’re excited to open the new location and get on with helping out locals with their DIY and gardening needs again.”

The new location will form part of a retail hub along with New World, Smith’s City, Hunting and Fishing, Postie, and Kaikoura Community Gym.

“Once the decision to relocate was made we conducted a thorough review of the available sites in the Kaikoura region,” recalls Roz.

“After finding that none of the available sites met the suitability and size requirements for a Mitre 10 store, we decided re-branding as a Hammer Hardware was the best way to continue the store’s legacy.”

The Hills promise that the new location will carry a full range of home improvement, paint and gardening supplies, and Cindy Hills is excited to once again weave her magic in the new garden centre.

“Kaikoura residents are passionate gardeners – so it was essential that the new location had a similar sized garden centre too,” says Cindy.

“We’ll still have a great range of products that you’d expect in a home improvement store, as well as the same friendly faces - albeit in a smaller space.”

The Family is excited to be a part of the positive outlook for the town and James Hills says they’re eager to help residents get back to business as usual.

“We want to thank Kaikoura locals for their patience and support throughout the re-opening process,” James says.

“The re-build has been a massive undertaking for the whole region but the positive, supportive attitudes of locals says a lot about who we are and the kind of town we’ll continue to be.”
