Kellogg’s on the menu at Auckland City Mission this October
Auckland, New Zealand, Monday 2 October 2017: Kellogg’s has today announced that its team will be serving up breakfast at the Auckland City Mission (ACM) every Friday morning throughout the month of October, in recognition of the first anniversary of its ongoing partnership with the Mission. Kellogg’s staff will be rolling up their sleeves to help serve up a nourishing breakfast of cereal, fruit, yoghurt and milk to the Mission’s regular clients, as well as people dropping in requesting a meal.
Since forging its partnership with Auckland City Mission in October 2016, Kellogg’s has donated more than 40,000 serves of cereal and snacks to help Kiwis in need. Kellogg’s ongoing partnership with the Auckland City Mission aligns with the company’s global initiative, Breakfast for Better Days, which aims to fight food insecurity and hunger by providing 2.5 billion serves of cereal and snacks across the globe by the end of 2025.
Ben O’Brien, Kellogg’s Country Manager, says he’s extremely proud to be supporting the Auckland City Mission.
“It’s a privilege to be involved with the incredible work that the Auckland City Mission does in our community. We hope that the small role that Kellogg’s plays in supporting the Mission will make a difference in the lives of Kiwis who need it most.”
“October is a time to reflect on the issue of hunger in our community and across the globe, as it marks both World Homeless Day on 10th October and World Food Day on 16th October. Kellogg’s has taken this as an opportunity to lend an extra hand and to try and raise the profile of all the fantastic work that is done by the Mission. We encourage all businesses and individuals to consider any ways that they might be able to support the Auckland City Mission, whether that be by donating time, money, food or household items in the lead up to the Mission’s annual Christmas appeal.”
Chris Farrelly, Auckland City Missioner, says that in terms of donations, every little bit counts.
“Every day there are far too many members of our community who are struggling to make ends meet and this often means food becomes a luxury that many people just can’t afford. Every Kiwi needs to start the day with breakfast, which is one of the reasons we are so pleased to have Kellogg’s on board to provide support.”
On average, the families that come to the Mission for support have just $21.94 per person, per week, to buy groceries. Given this average, a family of four would only have $87.76 per week to spend on groceries. In comparison, The University of Otago 2016 Food Survey estimates that the basic weekly cost of food for an average man alone nearly surpasses that amount at $64, per week.
Last year alone, almost 13,000 Aucklanders received emergency food assistance from the Mission to help feed themselves and their families. In total, these food parcels provided more than 41,500 people with 498,000 meals.
To provide support during the cold winter months and to raise awareness of the Mission’s need for additional food donations, Kellogg’s recently launched a pop-up Kellogg’s Café in Aotea Square. For every item sold at the café, Kellogg’s donated a serve of cereal back to the Auckland City Mission. Proceeds from the café were also donated to the Mission.
