Job ads on SEEK not affected by General Election, up 11.1 per cent y/y this August

The latest SEEK data has revealed there were 11.1 per cent more new job ads on SEEK this August than 12 months ago.

Janet Faulding, General Manager for SEEK New Zealand, said the approaching General Election did not deter hirers from advertising jobs on SEEK this August.

“Our latest SEEK job ad data points to a growing New Zealand labour market with more opportunities on SEEK for Kiwis this August than the same period last year,” said Faulding.

“While off a low base, the industries that enjoyed the largest advertising growth on SEEK across New Zealand this August were Mining, Resources & Energy [up 53 per cent year on year (y/y)] and Farming, Animal & Conservation [up 46 per cent y/y],” Faulding added.

The most sought-after Mining, Resources & Energy professionals, and their average advertised annual salaries on SEEK were:

• Power Generation & Distribution, $86,690

• Mining Operations, $90,347

While the most in-demand Farming, Animal & Conservation workers, and their average advertised annual salaries on SEEK were:

• Horticulture, $66,683

• Veterinary Services & Animal Welfare, $70,195

“Across New Zealand, the industries that had the most job opportunities on SEEK this August were Information & Communication Technology [up 1 per cent y/y], Trades & Services [up 19 per cent y/y] and Manufacturing, Transport & Logistics [up 30 per cent y/y],” revealed Faulding.

MAJOR REGIONS

“Of the major regions this August, Wellington notched up the strongest growth in job ads on SEEK, up 15.4 per cent y/y. Fuelling this uplift were the following industries - Information & Communication Technology [up 7 per cent y/y], Administration & Office Support [up 9 per cent y/y] and Government & Defence [up 9 per cent y/y],” said Faulding.

“The Canterbury labour market has been recovering steadily since March this year, with advertising on SEEK up 9.2 per cent y/y this August. Trades & Services and Manufacturing, Transport & Logistics remain the top advertising industries, up 8 per cent y/y and 30 per cent y/y respectively.

“Advertising trends continue to be very positive in Auckland, up 5.9 per cent y/y this August. Information & Communication Technology sector continues to offer the most job opportunities on SEEK across the region,” Faulding continued.

INDUSTRY FOCUS – EDUCATION & TRAINING

New job ads on SEEK for the Education & Training industry grew 19 per cent from June to August 2017 when compared to the same period last year.

“At a national level, the most job opportunities on SEEK across Education & Training industry from June to August 2017, were for Tertiary Teachers and Early Childhood Teachers. Advertising for both fields also enjoyed year on year growth, rising 15 per cent y/y and 27 per cent y/y respectively,” revealed Faulding.

“While off a lower base, the greatest growth in advertising over the past three months [June to August 2017] for the Education & Training industry was for Childcare & Outside School Hours Care roles, with job ads increasing a notable 92 per cent y/y.

“It’s no surprise there are more new job ads on SEEK for childcare professionals than 12 months ago. Childcare is a booming sector across New Zealand with an increasing demand for more centres and places,” said Faulding.

“The NZ Herald reported in February this year that since 2008 the proportion of children enrolled in Early Childhood Education [ECE] has risen from 93.6 per cent to 96.6 per cent, while time spent in ECE has reached an average of 21.7 hours a week, up from 13.5 hours in 2000. Therefore, more childcare professionals are being seeked to supply this growing demand,” Faulding continued.

The Auckland region offered the most jobs across the Education & Training industry over the past three months [June to August 2017], rising 15 per cent y/y.

Wellington was the next best city for Education & Training opportunities [up 20 per cent], followed by Canterbury [up 12 per cent y/y] then Waikato [16 per cent y/y].

The national advertised annual salary for the Education & Training industry is $69,927.
