Overall New Zealand Radio Listenership Increases,Mai Fm Gains More than 50k Listeners Nationwide
Overall national radio listenership has lifted to 3,360,100 according to the GfK Total New Zealand Commercial Radio Survey results with MediaWorks Radio again growing in popularity, increasing total listeners by 33,600 to reach 2,308,200 people nationwide across its nine radio brands.
Leon Wratt, Group Content Director – Music, MediaWorks Radio said: “To see the overall national radio listenership increase for the third time this year is a very positive result for radio.”
“Mai’s Morning Crew and the debut of Polly & Grant on More FM Wellington are the MediaWorks success stories in these results, both teams have done an incredible job along with many of the other stations both on air and across digital platforms. It’s a job well-done and I am really proud.”
For the first time, Mai FM is the number one breakfast show in Auckland with 143,300+ listeners tuning in to Nickson, Nate and Lily each morning - an increase of 28,200+ from the previous survey. Nationally, Mai FM has increased their overall cumulative audience by 51,100 - a 12.7% increase to reach 452,600 within the same period.
In Wellington, More FM is the success story with Polly & Grant proving to be an instant hit among listeners almost doubling the breakfast show share to 7.4%**, up from 4.3%. RadioLIVE has also seen an increase in share to 5.1%#, up 1.7%.
Continuing the trend in Christchurch, Mai FM has increased its total listeners by more than 20% to 51,900~ and RadioLIVE also experienced an increase of 16.4% to 31,200~. The Breeze also recorded its highest ever share result with 12.2% in this market~~. More FM remains the most popular station across the day with 13.9%~~ share and 95,600~ listeners.
In the commercially important 25-54 demographic, MediaWorks continues to lead the way with 54.9%^ share of the market and the top five stations in this demographic nationwide^: The Rock, More FM, The Edge, The Breeze and The Sound.
The Edge still attracts the most listeners across the country with an audience of 625,800, followed by More FM in second place with 526,700 - an increase of 12,900. The AM Show on RadioLive also grew more than 10,000* listeners nationally.
The Breeze is the leading music station in the country with 7.9% of commercial share, followed by The Rock and More FM***.
In the regions, MediaWorks radio stations in the 25-54 demographic are showing a 7.9%^ lift in Tauranga to claim 53.5%^ of the market share. Similarly, Rotorua is up 17.1%^ to lead the demographic with 54%^ of the market and Dunedin is up 3.6%^ to 54.4%^ of the market.
Rova is going from strength-to-strength with more than 215,000 app downloads to date - a 35% increase since the previous GfK Survey in July 2017. The success of The Rock 1500 countdown also contributed, increasing daily unique users by 5%.
