Social Workers Day Celebration 2017
Social Workers across the country gather today, 27th September, to celebrate New Zealand Social Workers Day. It is a time to acknowledge and honor the contribution social workers make to enhancing the wellbeing of New Zealanders.
The important contribution of social workers goes unnoticed however the impact this profession has on the lives of New Zealand families and communities is significant and long lasting.
On Social Workers Day, we say Congratulations to ANZASW Member Nicki Weld who has been awarded the Supreme Quality and Innovation Award 2017 for Innovate Social Work Practice for her handbook entitled ‘E ko te Matakahi Maire’. This innovative piece of work provides an ‘encyclopaedia’ of therapeutic interventions. A resource that may be used by the 6000 social workers in this country and a valuable resource for Social Work Schools and the students.
Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga, the largest Maori health, social and education provider in Hawke’s Bay, and lead partner for Whānau Ora was also awarded the Certificate of Achievement, Innovative Practice and Indigenous Knowledge for Te Wairatahi which provides easy access to holistic services at Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga. Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga recognise that there is a vital indigenous knowledge perspective that forms part of their service vision and is key to engagement with Maori and Pakeha alike. The values in practice were described as whanaungatanga, kotahitanga, kaitiakitanga and whakamana underpin the holistic way of working to support the kaimahi, clients and their families. This is a fantastic example of social work practice, policy and organisational transformation in action.
Social Workers make a difference in the lives of people, families and communities.
